Kilian Pschierer
I'm Kilian, a DPhil student working on growing hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in a dish, supervised by KJ Patel, Linda van Bijsterveldt, and Felix Dingler.
HSCs can rebuild the blood system over a lifetime, and this ability is already used to treat blood disorders. However, we still lack good tools for growing and manipulating HSCs outside the body, which limits both research and treatment. My DPhil aims to help close this gap. More broadly, I am interested in ageing (and potential interventions) and curious what this work could reveal about it in stem cells.
I completed a BSc in Mathematics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). During my degree, I worked on interpretability methods for vision models in the Borgwardt lab at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, and studied the dynamics of how enzymes self-organise in the Gerland group at TUM. Furthermore, I combined RNA-seq analysis with recombineering to study how E. coli cells respond to formaldehyde-induced DNA damage, a process linked to human ageing, in the Patel group at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine.
Outside the lab, I play guitar, watch wildlife, and row.
