Caroline Cannistra
Caroline is a fourth year DPhil student advised by Profs. Chang Liu and Charlotte Deane. She completed her bachelor's degree at the University of Washington in bioengineering and applied mathematics, and began her graduate studies at the University of California Irvine in systems biology.
Her research focuses on the evolution of protein complexes and de novo gene birth, as well as gene birth through gene duplication. She uses F-type ATP synthase in yeast as a model system to observe how protein complexes change in function when individual subunits rapidly mutate, using the continuous directed evolution platform OrthoRep to mutate these subunits. With molecular dynamics simulations, she can test and validate mechanistic models of protein subunit interaction and cooperativity.
In her free time, she enjoys knitting, singing in choir, kayaking, and spending time with her tortoise, Henry.
